Antique show dealers see low prices, little youth interest - Tacoma News Tribune

Image
At the annual Southwestern Pennsylvania Council for the Arts Antique Show & Sale in Hempfield over the weekend, items ran the gamut from antique jewelry to vintage toys, from kitschy pop culture items to sports memorabilia. What's missing is a younger generation of antique collectors, dealers say. "Our goal is get a younger clientele interested in antiques and the antiques market," said show organizer John Mickinak, owner of the Ligonier Antique Gallery. "If we don't, it will eventually fade away." The show does that by inviting a diverse array of dealers, featuring newer items, offering appraisals and appealing to the non-specialist, he said. Digital Access for only $0.99 For the most comprehensive local coverage, subscribe today. #ReadLocal "So many shows today don't get it — they think 'antique' has to be 200 years old. There are just a few days remaining in January, but the racks containing mu‘umu‘u of various styles are full. Proceeds from the sale of the vintage clothing go to the Kauai Historical Society as part of January being Mu‘umu‘u Month, said Shannon Hiramoto, proprietor and seamstress at Machine Machine Apparel in the Lawai Warehouse. “Through the year, I collect a lot and sell them in the shop during January to fundraise for the Kauai Historical Society,” Hiramoto said. “Last year, some $1,300 was raised. It is very fun to tie the garments back to a historical context, and wearing them brings history to life.” During Mu‘umu‘u Month that is celebrating its fifth year, Hiramoto does several events, including a lei po‘o workshop, a mu‘umu‘u repair clinic, and several mu‘umu‘u field trips, including a tour of the historic Grove Farm Museum, and even throwing clay at a class at Clayworks at Kilohana in Puhi. “This year, we have the most women ever participating, and it is officially becom...

Lynda's Antique Clothing Loft Shifting Spaces in Adams - iBerkshires.com

Image
A cascade of hat boxes in one area of the store.  ADAMS, Mass. — Lynda's Antique Clothing Loft is making a move but the shop won't be leaving Park Street — but it will be moving up. After 12 years at 39 Park St., Lynda Meyer is downsizing and moving to a smaller location right above her current one.  "It is a very bright new space and I will like the privacy," Meyer said. "Women always like to change the furniture around and there is a part of me that really likes the idea of creating a new space." The vintage clothing expert said building owner Bishop West Real Estate plans to turn her space into its new office but has offered her the new location upstairs in the same building. This leaves Meyer with 12 years worth of antique clothing, jewelry, and other odds and ends that go back as far as 1860 and span 10 decades "This has been a very curated accusation of 12 years which is why it is not that easy to just go 'poof,' " she said. ...

Local featured on history channel's 'American Pickers' - WJAC Johnstown

Image
LOCAL FEATURED ON AMERICAN PICKERS.PNG CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) —  Are you a fan of History Channel's hit show American Pickers? Well, you may have recognized the city and collector in Mondays episode. The show featured longtime Johnstown hair stylist and collector Jack Roscetti. American Pickers actually approached Roscetti about being on the show several years ago. But Roscetti said he wasn't ready to part with some of his collection until recently. "Every day of my life, I come and visit parts of my life, and that's still intact," Roscetti said. A Windber native, Roscetti's shop, "Jack Rosetti Salon," is a very personal portrayal of his life. His collecting all started thanks to one rock band. "Ever since I was 20, probably, and I started to dress fashionably in the early stages of the Beatle era," Roscetti said. Roscetti has been cutting hair in Johnstown for 55 years; his first store was in the Conrad building for more ...

Antiques Show & Vintage Market this weekend will showcase objects with stories to tell - Grand Island Independent

Image
KEARNEY — Jason Combs calls his love of antiques a “genetic disorder.” When he was growing up in Fairfax, Mo., his grandparents and parents took him to flea markets in places like Brownsville, Neb., and White Cloud, Kan., and antiques soaked into his soul. “I like the stories antiques tell. I’m curious about what they have to say,” Combs said. This weekend, he and Sherry Morrow will co-produce the Antiques Show & Vintage Market from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Ramada Inn at 301 Second Ave. The 28 vendors from Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas and Iowa will sell glassware, jewelry, toys, vintage clothing and more. “Once people buy from a vendor, they come back to that vendor. Vendors often buy their wares with a specific customer in mind,” Morrow said. “We don’t want a whole room with the same type of stuff. The better the items we have, the more people we draw, especially if known vendors are going to be there.” Combs owns Burr Oak Antiques...
