Fashion ripples during the new year lull - The Japan Times

May I have a word about… the finer points of fashion - The Guardian

Image
A s those who know me will readily attest, I could never be accused of being a fashion victim. My clothes-buying decisions seldom go beyond whether I really need another linen shirt or whether or not to go for turn-ups. Yet last week, I found myself being drawn into the curious - to me – world of high fashion and its singular vocabulary: capelet, tuxedo-jupe, paper-bag waists, cigarette-style trews, point-of-difference pencil skirt. I realise that I’m not exactly the target audience but the more I read the more mystifying it all became. And I was fully flummoxed by pull-up trousers. Pull-up trousers? What else could they be? But then I had a eureka moment. Why, all along I’ve been at fashion’s cutting edge. I can now shamelessly parade my pull-up socks, flaunt my tie-up shoes and sport my dernier cri collection of button-up shirts. Moving swiftly on from couture to the commonplace. How annoying can the little things be, which creep perniciously into everyday usage? Consider the fo...

Image
MORGANTOWN — The path to a career in the fashion industry just became clearer for three West Virginia University students, including a senior from Parkersburg. Emma Ervin of Parkersburg, Katelynn Walker and Mariah White, all fashion, dress and merchandising students, were recently named 2019 YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund recipients — an honor that includes a $5,000 scholarship as well as networking and internship opportunities. “This was the first year WVU was invited to participate in the competition,” said Katie Jones, assistant professor of fashion, dress and merchandising in the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design. “Being invited confirms what we have always known — our students are some of the best and brightest out there. Of the 740 applicants nationwide, only 208 were awarded scholarships. For three of those to come from WVU really speaks to the caliber of our students and the quality of our program.” The merit scholarships are awarded based on the co...

21 of the Best New Fashion and Beauty Items - WHOWHATWEAR

Image
I consider myself to be a mindful shopper . This wasn’t always the case, though. I used to make a fair share of impulse purchases, only to end up donating  or selling the item a year or so later, tags still attached in some cases (not a great feeling). Having learned from my past shopping mistakes , my purchases are a lot more deliberate now, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t buy things immediately from time to time. The things I buy immediately are just particularly special, and I know that I’ll start wearing and using them as soon as they arrive, which is always a sign of a wise purchase. Another thing that contributes to swift purchase for me is that I can just feel it when something is going to sell out quickly, and if I know that it would crush me if I missed out on the item, I don’t hesitate. And because sometimes I add beauty products to cart even quicker than I do fashion items (given the typically lower price point), I included a few of those as well. In case you’re cu...

Designers make a 'statement' at Paris Fashion Week runway show - WPVI-TV

Image
A pair of designers are making a big statement with their latest designs --- and we mean that literally. Viktor and Rolf let their latest couture collection do the talking for them at Paris Fashion Week. The Spring 2019 runway was filled with giant gowns, covered in actual fashion statements. Most of the messages seemed geared towards introverts, including, "Sorry I'm late, I didn't want to come" and "Leave me alone." There was also a tulle triangle of a dress that simply read, "NO." And finally, the crowd-pleasing, adorably anti-social statement, "I'm not shy, I just don't like you." No word on when the cynical collection will hit stores or how much it will cost to let your clothes say what you're really thinking. ------ Send a News Tip to Action News Learn More About 6abc Apps (Copyright ©2019 WPVI-TV. How to Succeed in Fashion Media in 2019 | BoF Professional | BoF - The Business of Fashion

Image
NEW YORK, United States — In the late aughts, MTV aired the cult-favorite reality television series The Hills and a generation of young people fell in love with the idea of working in fashion. Series stars Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port made their Teen Vogue internships look thrilling: they navigated the magazine’s fashion closet, helped style Lady Gaga for a photoshoot and scored tickets to runway shows. Their biggest challenge was deciding whether to spend a summer interning in Paris. Maria Del Russo, 28, credits the show, along with legendary editor Tina Brown, for inspiring her to pursue a career in magazines. She interned in the beauty departments at Women’s Health and Cosmopolitan during college. But by the early 2010s, the industry was struggling with declining print advertising. Del Russo saw that the era of “champagne lunches” was over and that there were more opportunities for young people to write online, so she worked for digital media publishers after graduating, event...

Local boutique features fashion line in trunk show - WVVA TV

Image
Casablanca Boutique in Bluefield, WV opened its doors to showcase the new spring line of Joseph Ribkoff. A representative from the line was in the store all day to offer customers a unique, personalized shopping experience. “That’s what we’re all about at the boutique. We want you to have a unique shopping experience, not waiting around for someone to open a dressing room for you. Come in, you can socialize, go through the line. You can just spend your time and enjoy it and be pampered,” said Cheryl Brodnik, owner of Casablanca Boutique. “It’s an experience. That customer is going to get that experience from when they walk in the door until they walk out. They ask your name, they get personal, they’re going to find out what you’re looking for,” said Cubby Luckert, the KY/WV Joseph Ribkoff rep. Luckert and Brodnik say the trunk show was such a success that they plan to organize a trunk show each season. http://bit.ly/2FYZeQx

5 Innovative Fashion Materials Made From Food By-Products - Forbes

Image
Future Fabrics Expo The Sustainable Angle The fashion industry has been using the same limited range of fabrics for centuries. Cotton, silk, leather and wool are undeniably great materials for making clothes but the surge in clothing production in recent decades has put enormous strain on these limited resources. The number of garments produced each year has doubled since 2000 according to McKinsey calling the sustainability of fabric production into question. The production of cotton, in particular, has been linked to soil erosion, soil degradation and water contamination as a result of pesticides and the 20,000 liters of water it requires to produce just one kilogram of cotton, enough to make a single t-shirt. Synthetic fabrics, such as polyester and acrylic, were hailed as a revolution for cheaper, easier to clean clothing in the early 20 th century but we now understand the negative impact they have. Polyester is known to produce carcinogens such as terephthalic acid a...
