The Best Trail Running Shoes For All Types Of Terrain - Forbes

Posted: 23 Sep 2020 08:40 AM PDT

In any given week, I log between 10 to 30 miles either jogging or riding my bicycle. Most of the miles on foot are on sidewalks and streets, with a few on gravel, dirt and grass, depending on the day's route. But regardless of whether I'm running or riding on roads or trails, I'm wearing trail running shoes, because they are simply the most versatile type of athletic shoe you can own.

The best trail running shoes are designed for use on terrain that varies from roots and rocks to dirt and mud, so they are also the perfect footwear for urban or suburban runs that may take you down city streets, through grassy parks, on stretches of sand or on rain-slick sidewalks. Trail running shoes are also designed to offer you maximum support, stability and protection. (The difference between a trail running shoe and a hiking boot is that hiking boots are heavier than trail runners as they are designed for someone carrying a heavy pack and logging many miles many days in a row, not someone moving as fast as possible with minimal gear for an hour or two.)

Heavier than your average sneaker (and much heavier than track shoes), trail running shoes have added cushioning to protect against painful heel strikes, which can be more intense as you go downhill, and a sturdier outsole that helps prevent injury on even surfaces, like gravel and tree roots. Then there's the lug pattern on a trail shoe's outsole, which is more aggressive than you'll see on road runners. The large, grippy soles of a trail runner give you more traction on rough terrain, which helps keep you on your feet and moving fast. (Though, like off-road tires, aggressive treading can actually slow you down on a street or track.)

MORE FROM FORBES7 Of The Best Hiking Boots For Fall, According To Serious Hikers

While all decent trail runners share the characteristics touched on above, this is by no means a monolithic category — there is a huge variety of trail shoes out there and they are suited to varied uses based on their differences. Fortunately for you, I'm a bit obsessed here (I own, at present, more than 10 pairs of trail running shoes, and have been through more than that many pairs in recent years), so I'm primed to elucidate the category for you. As such, here are some of the best trail running shoes I've encountered in my years in the game for every terrain, condition and more.

Best Trail Running Shoes Overall

Adidas Outdoor Terrex Agravic XT Trail Running Shoe

The Terrex line has been a huge success for Adidas for good reason: it's comprised of multiple examples of excellent outdoor gear. I've worn my Adidas trail runners in everything from rain and snow to cement and non-maintained trails and I always feel stable. Their sole is on the stiffer side, so not ideal for urban or suburban use when the conditions are dry and you don't need extra traction, but on trails covered in loose rocks, leaves and branches, and where the consistency of the surface varies, the wide spacing of the lugs offers great bite. And the TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) toe cap protects your toes against stubbing even as you scramble over a boulder or catch a curb. Also, the shoes have an understated style that allows you to wear them with jeans or other casual apparel, making them a good choice for when you need to pack extra light.

Best Trail Running Shoes For Flat, Dry Land

Nike Air Zoom Terra Kiger 6

Nike Air Zoom Terra Kiger 6 Trail Running Shoe

If you're going to be logging long miles on well-maintained trails (or predictable terrain like grasslands or country roads), these shoes are a great choice. The Terra Kiger 6's woven heel ensures the shoes stay securely in place by flexing with your foot so you enjoy support and avoid blisters. A padded tongue offers the top of your foot the same support and comfort even if it swells some during a long slog, while a thick, cushioned midsole supports the bottom of your foot. Mesh near the toes is bad news if it rains or you step in a puddle, but great news for hot dry days, as the ventilation and heat release are sublime. The tread pattern is only moderately aggressive, thus the shoe being best suited for reliable terrain.

Best All Weather Trail Running Shoes

Columbia Sportswear Facet 45 OutDry Shoe

The Facet 45s don't look like trail running shoes until you turn them over and see the tread pattern, and that's exactly the point. This looks more like upscale urban footwear, yet once your feet are slipped into these shoes — and I mean slipped in: there is no lacing system, you simply pull them on and then feel the upper secure around your foot thanks to the proprietary "Kinetic Lacing System" that uses two secure elastic bands over the foot bridge — you will enjoy the cushioning and support you expect in a trail shoe.

The shoes are reliably waterproof right up to the elevated collar which adds ankle support, warmth and keeps out snow, gravel and other unwanted stuff. The soles are quite thick and you may feel off-balance for a few minutes after first donning your Facet 45s, but you'll come to greatly appreciate how well the shoes absorb impact.

Best Trail Running Shoes For Steep Terrain

HOKA ONE ONE Mafate Speed 2

If your trail runs take you up and down again and again, then the Mafate Speed 2 trail runners belong high up on your list of shoes to consider. These shoes are ideally suited for steep terrain — whether you're slogging uphill or charging down — thanks to their highly grippy five millimeter Vibram treads that stick well to all sorts of surfaces and thanks to the varied pattern of the treads which interacts with the ground well whether your toes are hitting first as you gain elevation or your heels are making first contact on a descent.

If you prefer a muted, subtle style in your trail shoe, HOKA ONE ONE isn't your brand. But if you want a shoe that sticks you to the ground then helps propel you forward again at each step, go for it.

Best Trail Running Shoes For Cross-training

Merrell Bare Access XTR

I've worn my Bare Access shoes from Merrell on plenty of trails, but truth be told I use them even more often on my bike or at the gym. At barely more than eight ounces per shoe, these things are crazy lightweight, which makes sense given that they were expressly designed as minimalist trail runners and give better ground feel for your feet. That means they also let me connect well with bike pedals and stay light and fast while circuit training at a fitness center.

As trail shoes they offer enough cushioning and support for maintained trails and they're great on packed dirt, grass or streets, too. I'd never wear these to hike all day with a 45-pounds pack on my back or even go for a multi-mile run on rough terrain, but for days when I cycle, jog and do calisthenics or some weight training, they offer perfect versatility.

Best All Terrain and All Weather Trail Running Shoes

Salomon Speedcross 5 Trail Running Shoe

There's no secret why the Speedcross 5 is a superlative shoe for terrible conditions: just turn it over to get your answer. Yep, it's the lugs. The bottom of a Salomon Speedcross 5 has 33 lugs, including the two facing directly off the front of the shoe for grip during crazy steep climbs (compared to the 73 on the bottom of one of my Columbia Facet 45 trail shoes). These massive lugs are almost more like ice crampons than shoe treads, and as such this shoe will keep you stable on snow or ice, in mud, on dunes, and anywhere else the ground is just generally inhospitable to bipedal locomotion. (Want more convincing? At the time of this writing, these shoes have a glowing 4.8-star overall rating on Amazon with nearly 1,000 reviews posted to date.)

Best Lightweight Trail Running Shoes

New Balance Minimus Trail 10v1

These shoes have the least aggressive treading of any on this rundown, yet thanks to the stickiness of the Vibram rubber sole, they're suitable for use on many surfaces including trails in decent condition. And while not ideal for high alpine scrambles, they are actually a great choice for the country lane, the track, the street or even the gym. And at just 7.5 ounces per shoe (assuring mid-sizes, like a 9 or 10), they're so lightweight you could bring a pair along as a respite from your boots during a through-hike or pack them down into a small bag for a weekender.

Best Trail Running Shoes For Speed

Salewa Ultra Train 2 Trail Runners

If you're moving fast, as you tend to want to when, y'know, running on trails, these shoes are a good choice. Their 3F system provides support to your upper, heel and midsole, keeping your foot in proper position even as the ground changes thus affecting the pressures on your foot. They're also a good choice if you don't want to be slowed down by something pesky like tying shoelaces thanks to a quick lacing system or if you don't want to stop to get a rock out of your shoe thanks to a gaiter that covers most of the tongue. Competitive trail runners owe this storied European brand's shoes a test.

Jamal Murray’s Fluorescent Green Adidas Sneakers Steal the Show Against the Los Angeles Lakers - Footwear News

Posted: 23 Sep 2020 06:44 AM PDT

When it comes to on-court style, Jamal Murray does not disappoint.

The Denver Nuggets player led the team to victory last night against the Los Angeles Lakers to take the third game in the NBA Western Conference Finals. While Murray's impressive 28 points made headlines, it was his choice of sneakers that really drew attention.

The Canadian baller took the court in a set of unmissable neon green sneakers that stood out against the hardwood and caused a frenzy across social media.

For the game, Murray opted for the Adidas Dame 5 "Jam Fest" that released in 2019 for the McDonald's All American Game. The pair reimagines Murray's fellow basketball star Damian Lillard's fifth-generation Adidas sneaker with its neon green uppers, flexible cushioning and herringbone outsole pattern for quick mobility. The colorway also loops in touches of contrasting black accents across the tongue and heel tab, reading "Jam Fest" across the back.

Fans across Twitter were quick to share their thoughts on the bright sneakers, writing things including "Jamal Murray's sneakers left a permanent stain on my TV screen" and "Jamal Murray's shoes look like he is hitting the Turbo button."

One user even said that "Jamal Murray's shoes are so bright I thought TNT had a green screen and it was glitching."

Though his neon green shoes were hard to miss, last night's game wasn't the first time the star made the news for his choice of footwear. At the end of August, the pro baller wore custom Adidas Pro Model 2G sneakers coated with the images of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in a telling tribute.

When asked about the shoes in a postgame interview on Aug. 31, Murray said: "We found something we're fighting for as the NBA, as a collective unit, and I use these shoes as a symbol to keep fighting all around the world."

I don't know about you, but I've had a cleaning bug lately. I've been zooming from room to room tidying and opening windows for this fresh fall air. The urge to get rid of my wardrobe and replace everything is there too, even for shoes. I'd consider myself very average when it comes to shoes; I don't have tons to match with every outfit, but I definitely have more than a few pairs.

As a conscious consumer, I try to do my research before I buy anything new. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "vote with your dollar," and to me that means doing what I can to support brands that operate sustainably and ethically. However, finding ethically-sourced shoes can be difficult!

Thankfully, there are a number of brands that seem to check all the boxes on my Earth-friendly list without compromising style and comfort. Some brands have international certifications, some are cleaning plastic from the oceans, and some are creating jobs for women all across the globe. You're sure to find a style that matches your Pinterest boards and your values.

1. Allbirds

This isn't the first time we're including these bad boys. Allbirds are incredibly loved and well-reviewed, by us and thousands of fans. The company's approach is threefold: measure, reduce, and offset. It's transparent about its practices and carbon footprint, which means it can be held accountable if it starts to slip. The Allbirds sneaker is already more sustainable than your average sneaker, but I admire the effort too get to 0 kg CO2e.

As reviewers say, Allbirds are the most comfortable shoe. Made from naturally-found wool, eucalyptus trees, castor oil, and recycled plastic and cardboard, the shoes are lightweight, sleek, and modern. Plus, there are selections for activities like running and hiking or everyday basics to get you from place to place. I've noticed more and more feet on the sidewalks of the Midwest sporting Allbirds, and when my current shoes wear through I'm hopping on this bandwagon too!

2. Nisolo

Nisolo is an ethical footwear brand specializing in leather boots, loafers, oxfords, and accessories. It's quite transparent about sharing its practices and wages for factory workers in Peru, its efforts to combat global climate change, and ways it supports independent artisans. Nisolo's footwear collections are chic and durable. I love the look of leather, and for fall it's my go-to type of shoe to keep feet warm while still being fashionable.

Though Nisolo's footwear is expensive, you're also paying for peace of mind that your shoes are crafted with the environment (and animals) in mind. Nisolo is also working on expanding its shoe reclamation program, Soles for Souls, that collected over 5,000 pairs of shoes to help boost other countries' economies.

3. Rothy's

Rothy's seems to have a large internet following, and its sustainable practices are worth following. It makes flats in several styles that are 100% recyclable and can be washed endlessly without fading or breaking apart. To date, Rothy's claims to have diverted over 66 million plastic water bottles from landfills. It also uses ethically sourced Merino wool and plastic from the ocean (marine plastics) to create its classic yet funky styles.

Rothy's also ships in recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable materials, and it offsets its carbon emissions. It's worth noting that Rothy's shoes are expensive, but when you're getting a product that can be worn over and over again, it's easier to shell out. If you're on the fence, read our review after wearing them to and from the office for weeks.

4. Veja

If you haven't browsed Veja's large sneaker and casual shoe collection, you're welcome. It's a fair-trade sneaker company based in France. Veja upcycles common materials like plastic bottles, recycled textile scraps, and polyester to create its products. It's innovative too, creating B-mesh, which is an entirely-recycled material that is lightweight, waterproof, and durable. I keep coming back to the site because of the Vegan shoe section and their retro-inspired aesthetic. With a wide range of colors and styles, Veja makes it easy to find the right fit for anyone.

Also, huge thumbs up to Veja's leadership because their website is incredibly detailed about the company's transparency in sourcing, production, materials, and advertising ethics. I learned so much by scrolling through the infographics. I was shocked to see that they do zero advertising and—being a French brand—it explained why I hadn't seen much about Veja before.

5. Toms

Toms was the OG one-for-one company, giving a pair of shoes away for each one purchased. Since it began 13 years ago, it's donated nearly 100 million pairs of shoes. Toms is also a B Corporation, so it has high sourcing and production standards. The signature, comfortable Toms shoes are made with sustainable cotton and ship in recyclable packaging. Plus, Toms is working to improve both its materials and packaging in the next few years to use 100% sustainable cotton and 80% recycled materials.

You can shop the earthwise collection which includes its most sustainable and vegan shoes made from recycled and recyclable materials. And once you've worn them through, you can submit them to be recycled again into another product.

6. Everlane

Everlane has a great collection of ethically sourced footwear. It's known for making quality items that are made to last, without harming the planet to do so. Everlane has committed to using certified organic cotton and not creating plastic: instead only using what already exists.

Its recent release of the Forever Sneaker combines its practices with a classic silhouette made for everyday wear. It's made from 50% recycled cotton canvas, 50% cotton canvas upper, and a rubber outsole, making it fully recyclable. You can wear them until your heart's desire and have the satisfaction that they'll never end up in a landfill.

It's also important to note that while the company is known for its ethical shoewear, it has come under scrunity recently for its business ethics and lack of diversity after a complaint from multiple former employees. The company's president released a statement on Instagram apologizing to the employees and vowing to do better in the future.

7. Sézane

Sézane is a French luxury brand for women, and its clothing and shoes are very, very stunning. I don't dress up often, but scrolling through the site made me want to spend a day in the life of its models just for the shoes! I loved reading (and watching the videos) that detailed the company's close partnerships around the world to see how its products are made. In addition to using 70% environmentally friendly materials, it has multiple certifications (like GOTS and Oeke Tex) to ensure that its products aren't made with harmful chemicals.

Sézane's gorgeous pieces are made in factories that run on renewable energy, and it ships in 100% recycled material boxes or sustainable forests. And to top it off, it has a recycling program to divert used clothing and accessories from landfills. If you love fashion and ethically made goods, Sézane is certainly for you.

8. ABLE

ABLE, also known as Live FashionABLE, is a Nashville-based ethical brand that creates affordable clothing and supports women around the globe. ABLE commits to sustainability by repurposing discarded byrpoducts of the meat industry into leather, and shipping in recycled cardboard boxes and cloth dust bags in the near future. It also recycles leftovers from jewelry making, utilizes recycled silver, and works with other vendors who recycle their water—in some cases to drinkable levels!—during garment production. ABLE's footwear line follows these same ethics and many items meet FSC certification, meaning they pass strict, international environmental protocols.

9. 5028

5028 (pronounced Fifty Twenty-Eight) is a small-batch footwear company that gives second life to textile waste. Its products are "Upcycled Shoes," which utilize dead stock and leftover materials to produce limited edition styles. Even the footbeds are made from recycled scraps! Some materials are sourced from the finest tanneries in Portugal and Spain, and a selection of European craftsman assemble the shoes in this slow-fashion model. One of my favorite details is that it doesn't ship your shoes in a box in a box, because we all know how annoying that is!

10. Ecoalf

Ecoalf is the company that made the saying "Because there is no planet B" popular. It uses as few materials as possible to create quality products, including sneakers and slides. It diverts plastic waterbottles, post-industrial waste, and post-consumer waste from landfills like polyester, nylon, cotton, wool, and tires. The way the company makes its flip flops from tire rubber and powder is super interesting too. In addition to recycling materials, it's working on an initiative to remove plastic from oceans in order to create quality yarn material—it's collected over 500 tons so far!

11. Nae Vegan Shoes

Nae (No Animal Exploitation) is a vegan footwear brand from Portugal. Its shoes are designed for all-day comfort and to make the most of quality materials. (Plus Portugal's style is so warm and earthy!) It has several products, all in the RE-MOVE line, made from marine plastic in an effort to free the oceans. It also creates from natural and recycled materials like plastic bottles, cork, organic cotton, and even fibers from pineapple leaves. It's an awesome brand in terms of ethics, especially for animal lovers around the world.

12. Indosole

Indosole is a cool company doing cool things. It turns tires into sandals and slides. How cool?! I didn't know that it takes thousands of years for tires to decompose, and in many countries they're burned instead of fuel, releasing harmful chemicals into the air. Indosole gives eight reasons why recycled tires make great footwear, like waterproof, grippy features and comfortable, supportive rubber footbeds. It's also a certified B corporation, which means it's met a series of standards to validate that its impact is environmentally responsible.
