Former NYPD officer is slashed in the arm at Wall Street station in Lower Manhattan as crime continues to surge 44 percent in Big Apple

A former NYPD officer was slashed in the arm at the Wall Street subway station in Lower Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon, as crime continues to surge a whopping 44 percent citywide.

The victim, 47, who was not named, was reportedly spit on before being stabbed in the right forearm during a dispute with a stranger around 4:15 p.m. while on the northbound 2 train platform, according to MTA and NYPD officials.

The alleged attacker reportedly spat at the man and his wife as the three of them exited the train, then followed the couple as they tried to flee.

The former officer was pictured as he was treated for the slashing wound by EMS. He was later taken to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital and got 'multiple stitches,' according to police.

Meanwhile, the attacker, who has yet to be identified or arrested as of Thursday, was described as wearing a camouflage jacket and jeans at the time of the slashing. The New York Post reported that he had been carrying a bag with a FedEx logo on it.

The brazen daytime slashing comes as transit crimes spike 73 percent in February alone compared to the same time last year, according to a PIX 11 investigation.

Crime in the Big Apple doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon. The New York subway has been ground zero, after an alarming 73.3 percent increase in underground incidents - including 182 in February alone, the NYPD reported.

Robberies are up 46 percent this year over 2021, according to the force's latest crime statistics. 

There has also been a nearly 28 percent increase in burglaries year-over-year. 

A recent poll of more than 9,000 employees revealed that 40 percent of those working in Manhattan wanted to move away due to rising crime. 

About 48 percent of those working in the other four boroughs agreed.

Hate crimes also have doubled since last year - with anti-Asian attacks more than tripling and anti-Semitic attacks up by a whopping 54 percent over the same time last year, from 134 to 207 incidents.

Overall crime in the city is up 44.6 percent since last year, with 5,215 felony assaults reported so far this year compared to 4,379 last year, a more than 19 percent spike.

There have been 3,361 robberies reported so far this year, a 46.1 percent rise from last year.

Rapes have also seen a dramatic spike with 386 cases reported compared to 312 at this point last year, a 23.7 percent jump. 

Recent surveillance footage captured yet another terrifying moment when a would-be Gatorade thief tried to stab a security guard with a hypodermic needle at a Duane Reade pharmacy in the Murray Hill neighborhood on Saturday.

The black clad thief was seen stuffing a bag with items from a refrigerator, police said.

Security cameras captured the suspect trying to make his way out the front door with the stolen goods before he was stopped by a 64-year-old security guard who grabbed on to the thief's bag.

The two immediately got into a scuffle, with the security guard refusing to let go of the bag.

The guard was able to get the best of the suspect and the bag fell to the floor, with a bunch of sports beverages and other items falling out and laying on the ground.

The suspect then backed away toward the entrance and returned, suddenly flashing a hypodermic needle at the guard.

The guard raised his arms to block the suspect as he lunged toward him and appeared to prick his hand.

In the end, the suspect fled the scene leaving behind his bag and goods, police said.

Police said the guard suffered some pain in his left hand but refused medical attention. The NYPD is still looking for the suspect.
