The man accused of stabbing someone after a pants trade gone wrong has now been charged with attempted murder.

Jarred Randal Womack, 37, was originally arrested on suspicion of assault and robbery, but prosecutors at Womack's hearing on Friday formally charged him with attempted first-degree murder after deliberation, according to court records.

In addition to the attempted murder count, Womack was charged with two counts of first-degree assault with extreme indifference and first-degree assault causing serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon. He was also charged with robbery and two sentence enhancers, one for causing serious bodily injury and another for the use of a weapon in a violent crime.

When he was arrested, Womack initially had two cases, one for the alleged stabbing the other for the alleged theft, but those cases have now been combined.

He is set for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 11, and is being held on $50,000 bond.

According to an affidavit, a man walked into the Flatiron Coffee, 2721 Arapahoe Ave., at 10 a.m. Tuesday and told the staff he had been stabbed.

He was taken to Boulder Community Health's Foothills Hospital with a stab wound that presented a "substantial risk of death," but was able to talk with a detective.

The man told police he had a probation hearing on Monday, but did not want to go with "dirty and torn up" pants, so he asked if he could trade pants with Womack while they were near the corner of 29th Street and Arapahoe Avenue.

During the trade, the man said Womack became angry and stabbed him in the back, though he said "it was possible (Womack) had a good reason," but did not elaborate.

After the stabbing, Womack reportedly went into an Eddie Bauer store, 1750 29th St., and ran out without paying after putting on a pair of pants in the changing room.

The stabbing victim identified Womack by his first name and alias, and police were able to locate him near Broadway and Canyon Boulevard.

Immediately, Womack told officers "I didn't do anything" multiple times, according to the affidavit. But in later questioning, Womack said he and the victim did trade pants but that the other man left him standing there in his boxers. Womack told police he stabbed the other man to show him "his actions were not acceptable."

A detective searching a breezeway on the 29th Street Mall found the original pair of pants contained feces which detectives noted "could be the reason for the altercation."

Police also found a knife near where Womack was arrested.

According to the affidavit, Womack was wearing the stolen pants from Eddie Bauer when police talked to him, and admitted to the theft.
