Wooden Shoes advance, Hearts, Bulldogs split | Local Sports - Effingham Daily News

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes went 2-0 on the second day of the Effingham/Teutopolis Christmas Classic Friday, including wins over Pleasant Plains 36-25 and an exciting overtime win over Lincoln Way East 60-59 to earn an appearance in the championship game Saturday night.

It was a rough first game for the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes against the Pleasant Plains Cardinals offensively, but the Wooden Shoes still prevailed.

The Wooden Shoes were up three going into the fourth quarter, and head coach Chester Reeder said that his teams defense needed to stay the same and execute more on the offensive side of the ball.

“I thought that we were being complacent and waiting to see what they did before we would attack,” Reeder said. “Defense was incredible tonight. I thought we played awesome from the defensive end. It proves that we can win any type of game.”

Leading the way for the Wooden Shoes was Dawson Smith who had 16 points and five rebounds.

In the team’s game against Lincoln Way East, Smith scored a game-high 28 points to help defeat Lincoln Way East. He shot 2-for-4 from beyond the arc and secured a team-best eight rebounds. Weber scored 10 points and shot 50 percent from the field on the night while securing five rebounds. Evan Wermert scored eight while Evan Addis scored seven and Mitch Hardiek scored six.

The wooden Shots shot 38 percent from beyond the arc as a team, and 51 percent from the field as a whole.

Up next, the Wooden Shoes will take on Sacred Heart Griffin in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Effingham High School.

St. Anthony vs Julian

The St. Anthony Bulldogs defeated Chicago Julian in their first game of the day Friday morning 69-28.

Jaccob Dust scored a team-best 17 points while also grabbing eight rebounds and shooting 60 percent from the field and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Aaron Webb added 12 points, including two made 3-pointers, while Kaden Fearday scored 10. Alex Brandenburger and Luke Ludwig each scored seven, while Bryson Wall scored five and pulled down nine rebounds.

St. Anthony vs Oak Lawn

In the team’s second game of the day, the Bulldogs were heart broken when Sami Osmani hit a fading heavily-contested jumper at the buzzer to defeat the Bulldogs 62-61.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow,” said St. Anthony head coach Cody Rincker. “But at the same time, we are getting better. You can see the progression we are making as a team. We’re full of juniors that play the bulk of our minutes. It’s a matter of time before we really figure out how to put it together to beat other good quality teams.

Jaccob Dust scored a team-high 22 points and pulling down 13 rebounds, while Jack Hoene had quite the game, scoring 18 points. Kaden Fearday scored 12 points, including two makes from long range. Luke Ludwig added five points.

The Bulldogs shot 42 percent as a team, but Oak Lawn finished shooting 55 percent on the game.

Up next, the Bulldogs will take on Antioch for 11th place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Effingham High School.

Effingham vs Chicago Corliss

The Effingham Flaming Hearts defeated Chicago Corliss in their first game of the day in a 63-59 overtime game with free throws proving key down the stretch.

“I told them that we weren’t done playing yet,” said Effingham head coach Obie Farmer. “They were having fun. We dug in. We kept climbing on them and were able to get ahead. We’ve got five guys on the court at any given time that can knock any shot down. It’s something we work on every day.

“Jacob Stoneburner did a heck of a job coming in at the end and giving us two points and knocked down a free throw. Three points for a kid that didn’t play for 30 minutes of it was big. He did a really good job.”

Landon Wolfe scored a game-high 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Parker Wolfe adding 15, including an impressive 10-for-12 at the charity stripe.

Nate Thompson added nine points, while Cole Marxman added seven.

The Hearts shot 55 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw line while holding Corliss to 44 percent and just 21 percent from deep.

Effingham vs Sacred Heart Griffin

In Effingham’s second game of the day, they fell to Sacred Heart Griffin 54-44.

Sacred Heart Griffin opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run, while holding the Flaming Hearts to six made field goals in the second half.

“That makes it pretty tough,” Farmer said. “They spread us out and gapped us. They had or offense figured out and we ran out of gas a little bit and they exploited us.”

Parker Wolfe scored a game-best 17 points, while Landon Wolfe scored 14. Drew Thompson scored seven points, including two makes from 3-point range.

However, the Flaming Hearts shot better from the field, 62 percent compared to Sacred Heart Griffin’s 48 percent.

Up next, the Flaming Hearts will take on Lincoln Way East for third place at 6 p.m. Saturday at Effingham High School.

Antioch vs Altamont

Antioch’s Dan Fillipone proved to be too much for Altamont Indians Friday, scoring 34 points in the first game of the second day to down the Indians 79-51.

For the Indians, Alek Biggs and Noah Teasley each scored 12 points. Kaden Eirhart scored 11, while Denver Duckwitz added 10.

The Indians shot 42 percent from the field, while Antioch shot 79 percent.

Altamont vs Lawrenceville

In the Indians’ second game of the day, they were able to rebound nicely by defeated Lawrenceville 63-53.

Biggs scored a team-best 19 points, including three makes from beyond the arc. Aidan Jahraus added 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Noah Teasley added nine points while Tyler Robbins added six. Tony Klitzing and Eirhart each scored four.

Up next, the Indians will take on Charleston for 13th place at 11:30 a.m. at Effingham High School in the auxiliary gym.
