"Before we get into the show, let me apologize. Yesterday I wore a sweater that apparently upset a lot of people, that was not my intention.

"I simply bought a sweater from the internet, and I will never wear it again, and that is all I can say. I still don't know what the connotations are or why people are upset, but I am not going to wear it again, OK? That's that."

Whoopi wore a 'Prince Hall Masonic' sweater which has a logo of the Prince Hall Freemasonry.

The Prince Hall Freemasonry, which was founded by Prince Hall, is an African-American fraternity and a branch of the North American Freemasonry.

Prince Hall advocated for the freedom and education rights of African Americans and members of the organisation have continued his legacy.

Viewers react on Twitter

A number of social media users took to Twitter to offer their thoughts on why they were upset after Whoopi sported the sweater on national television.

One person explained: "Why is Whoopi Goldberg wearing a Prince Hall Masonic Sweater on the View? So disrespectful. She should do some research before she just put anything on and comes on National Television."

Another one said: "The reason people were upset about your sweater is that it represents a Masonic Fraternity the Freemasons. You not being a member and wearing it was the problem."

Other people have defended Whoopi and thanked her for promoting the organisation.

"I am a Prince Hall Mason and the sweater you wore on your show was actually very nice. To offset some of the controversy why not auction it and donate proceeds to a lodge of your choice or charity of the choice of the lodge?" another user tweeted.

Someone else added: "Wearing a Prince Hall Mason Sweater is the most appropriate and loudest messaging never made. It illustrate African Americans after 300+ years, are still demanding their rights, respect and true-life freedom."
