There's a certain excitement that comes with dressing up for work or special occasions — but for many women, it's often counteracted by the dread of squeezing into too-tight pumps or those beautiful but stiff leather loafers that always leave behind blisters.

Truth of the matter is, dress shoes have earned a reputation for being uncomfortable.

Beyond temporary soreness and abrasions, wearing ill-fitting or unsupportive shoes can negatively impact not only the health of your feet but also that of your entire body. According to a report from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), high heels place the foot at an angle and often throw the joints and muscles there out of alignment. This leads to poor posture, which in turn can result in pain in the lower back, neck and shoulders. What's more, sporting styles with too-tight toe boxes can cause you to develop painful and unsightly bunions.

Nowadays, however, dress shoes are more wearable than ever  — and not only when it comes to offerings from traditional comfort brands. A range of on-trend, affordably priced labels like Everlane and Birdies to designers like Sarah Flint offer chic styles you can actually wear for hours without hobbling around in pain. These looks offer perks like hidden cushioning, soft, chafe-reducing linings and expanded toe boxes.

Doctor of osteopathy Sajid A. Surve explained to the AOA that the best heels and shoes should offer balanced height, ample toe space and a snug fit to minimize friction.

What Harry Styles in a dress tells us about fashion and gender - ABC News

Posted: 19 Nov 2020 08:41 PM PST

If the internet is anything to go by, Harry Styles did something very controversial this week: he wore a dress.

The former One Direction star is the first man to grace the cover of Vogue magazine solo, and did so wearing a custom-made Gucci ballgown paired with a blazer.

Inside the mag, Styles talked about how much he loves breaking down gender stereotypes in fashion.

"What's really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away.

"When you take away 'There's clothes for men and there's clothes for women,' once you remove any barriers, obviously you open up the arena in which you can play," he told Vogue.

"I'll go in shops sometimes, and I just find myself looking at the women's clothes thinking they're amazing."

Of course, Harry's choice didn't go unnoticed, causing some outrage among elements of the conservative right-wing media, especially commentator Candace Owens, who called for the return of "manly men".

It's important to note the majority of people were fanning over Styles in a dress rather than hating on him.

A turning point for fashion's gender norms?

RMIT fashion lecturer Dr Alexandra Sherlock says Styles isn't the first famous man to rock a frock, but his status as a straight heartthrob adored by women makes him different.

"He's not the first in terms of playing round with gender codes in fashion… but where we don't see it as much is men who are perceived to be straight," Dr Sherlock told Hack.

While the feminist movement helped women break away from narrow gender roles, making it acceptable for women to wear trousers (shocking) and express their own interpretation of femininity, Dr Sherlock says men don't get the same freedom.

"Over time we've seen that men have been subject to quite restrictive notions of what it means to be a man, behave like a man, look like a man," she said.

On the question of whether Harry's fashion choices will trickle down to the mainstream, Dr Sherlock highlighted what's known as the "adopter curve" in fashion.

"You start with an influencer or innovator who's happy to step out of social conventions and do something different or daring," she explained.

"Then you have the various adopters beneath that - the early majority, the late majority, and then the laggards later on, who pick up these innovations."

"The more people there are like Harry Styles and the more people showing it's ok to do it and you can still be popular and desirable, the more men will think it's ok to do it."
