Georgette Niles, 47, the social worker behind the Grown and Curvy Woman blog, tried on clothing Thursday night in between sipping spring cocktails, nibbling from the cheese bar, and enjoying pistachio macaroons. "It's nice to to be able to go in a store and actually shop the same clothes as the other women and not just have to rely online … I feel disheartened when I go into the plus size of a store and there are items in plus that have no pizzazz, no color … nothing. The size 20 is a real size 20, not a junior size 20."

Dressing down to bring sales up: Burlington to offer more casual clothes - Omaha World-Herald

Posted: 02 Jun 2019 10:00 PM PDT

Burlington Stores Inc. plans to offer more casual and activewear clothes instead of its legacy dresses and suits in order to keep up with changing customer preferences, the company's chairman and CEO, Thomas Kingsbury, said last week.

Although the New Jersey company's total sales rose 7.3% to $1.6 billion in the first quarter, which ended May 4, the women's clothing category has not been performing as well. So the hope, Kingsbury said on an earnings call, is that focusing on the sportswear offering within women's clothing will boost the category.

"We need to move on from dresses and suits," Kingsbury told analysts. "We need to make sure that we're presenting to the customer the product that they want."

Casual and comfortable clothing has been edging out more formal work attire.

The U.S. women's suit market has dropped almost in half to $407.7 million since 2013, while men's suits dropped by 12% to $1.98 billion, according to Euromonitor International, a market researcher.

At the same time, Euromonitor's beauty and fashion consultant Ayako Homma said the "athleisure" brands are offering such clothes as blouses and blazers that people can wear to work. Homma attributes this change to the millennial generation entering the workforce and preferring a more casual environment.

Although the casual workplace culture started in the early 1990s with "casual Fridays," it expanded to more days of the week, said Barbara Kahn, a marketing professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

Burlington, based in Burlington, New Jersey, made its name as a coat-focused off-price store and transitioned in 2006 to a department store model. When that didn't work, the company zeroed in on becoming a well-known off-price retailer, Wells Fargo Securities analysts wrote in a Thursday note to investors.

Marcie Sorrentino's Comments: The skirt is so lightweight it makes for easy movement on the court. Really love the style and look of this skirt. The shorties are perfect too, not too tight not too loose. I also love the length of the skirt and overall fit of it. Definitely will be one of my favorite skirts! Will definitely start trying some Babolat clothing going forward.

.

Jo-Ann Kilmer's Comments: I loved the lightweight fabric that was used on the skirt. The fit was true to size.  It is a very comfortable and the length was perfect. I also liked the fit.  The only improvement I would suggest is the style – I am not a big fan of pleated skirts. Overall though I really like the skirt.

.

Pam Zentko's Comments: I loved the skirt, the fit was perfect, a little extra room in the waist and I went with my normal size. The length of the skirt was short. Since I am 5'3″ I appreciate a shorter skirt. The material was very light weight and very soft, definitely a different material than I am used to but will be very comfortable in the hot summer months. I felt comfortable in it, moving around the court, I wasn't pulling the shortie's down at all, it just had a nice overall fit. The skirt has a cute style too, nice pleats on the side gave it a unique look.

.

Wendy Goffin's Comments: I loved this Babolat skirt with the side pleat and amazing lightweight material. This was a perfect skirt for style and looks overall.  The only issue for me is that I am a tall tennis player and the skirt was quite short looking on me. Again, the size runs a bit small and should be noted on product descriptions so expectations are met when ordering. Babolat should continue bringing stylish tennis clothes to the market. They really do a nice job with their clothing overall.

.

Deb Davis' Comments: The skirt was very lightweight and moisture wicking, especially the built in shorts. I like how the shorts were sewn because the way they were stitched contributed to Improved performance. Meaning, the shorts did not bunch up nor did they feel too tight.  This was a real PLUS for the skirt. Again, I liked the overall design and how the dots on one side of the skirt matched the dots on the one side of the shirt. I am 5′ 2″, so the skirt was just an inch or two longer than I usually wear.  Giving choices on skirt length can a dress this concern. There were no pockets, but I prefer to tuck the tennis ball into the side of the built-in shorts which worked fine.  This skirt is very nice looking on and provides the fit and lightweight feel so you never feel weighed down or like you have to fuss with the skirt or built in shorts to readjust during a match like women sometimes have to do. I Might have liked a slightly wider waistband, But the one provided fit comfortably. Overall, I recommend both the shirt and skirt for the player who is ready to play their best tennis!
